UPDATE : Weights and Measures Working Group

November 2024 : Update on ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Council's decision to formÌýaÌýWeights and Measures Working GroupÌý(WMWG), to review the current weights and measures qualification assessment and training offering.
In April 2024, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø's Council tasked ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø to form a Working Group to undertake a robust review of this element, while ensuring that it is sustainable and fit for purpose for the profession across all four nations of the UK.
Terms of Reference
The terms of reference have been agreed by Council and the Working Group now has representatives from the following areas/sectors and nations to ensure that the consultation of the weights and measures element is rigorous, and all voices are heard.
- Qualifications Panel (representing QP not Council)
- ACTSO
- SCOTSS
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
- W&M’s lead officer group
- W&M’s Industry
- ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Trainers.
Key Areas to be Addressed
Having reviewed the terms of reference, the Working Group agreed on the key areas to be addressed:
- Current Landscape:ÌýAssessing and recognising the need of the current landscape of Trading Standards profession and metrology.
- Consensus View:ÌýThe importance of developing a consensus view of potential alterations to the assessment and training options for weights and measures which is suitable for all nations across the UK.
- Flexible Approaches:ÌýInvestigating flexible approaches before considering the implications for qualifications.
- Make Recommendations:ÌýDuring the tenure of the Working Group, it will develop recommendations for ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Council to consider.
Next Steps
The Working Group first met in Autumn 2024 and will continue to engage at regular intervals over the next year.Ìý And, as collaboration and consultation are critically important to its work, we strongly urge you to provide your own feedback via your branch representatives.
PLEASE NOTE:ÌýThe ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Weights and Measures Qualification Framework assessment and training offerings and the Level 6 TSP apprenticeship training will not be impacted or altered throughout the review process.
It is the aim of the Working Group to provide an initial report to the Spring 2025 Council meeting, with their final recommendations submitted for consideration at the Autumn 2025 Council meeting.Ìý In the meantime, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø will continue to provide members with progress updates throughout the review process.
